FAQs

What is registered massage therapy (RMT)?

Sometimes called “therapeutic” or “remedial” massage, registered massage therapy is evidence informed practice that involves assessment, treatment, reassessment and movement of soft tissue and joints of the body. Treatment plans are created with a strong education in anatomy, physiology and pathology. Primarily a systemic (whole body) approach used to treat specific musculoskeletal concerns to prevent and treat injury and pain. The treatment approach is decided based on the therapists assessment and on what you as the client expect from your treatment.

What makes RMT different from a relaxation massage?

In a general sense I am still providing relaxation by using techniques that affect the nervous system to allow tension in your muscles, joints and fascia to decrease which in turn decreases pain and increases mobility. The difference is that I am specific with the techniques I use to work with your body, this is where my assessment and what you tell me informs which muscles we may want to “release” and which we may want to “activate”. By being specific and individualised, I can also help bring your awareness to your body so you can better tune in to what your body may need in order to continue to support yourself. Basic massage alone is not sufficient to treat concerns long term, combining massage with activity, education and the right intention gives you the best opportunity to achieve your wellbeing goals.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Preferably wear something comfortable such as T-shirt, sports bra and shorts for women and shorts and T-shirt for men. Depending on your presenting complaint I will let you know if I think you may require some treatment modalities where you will be fully clothed but most commonly you will undress to your comfort level and be adequately covered on the table during the treatment. I will only uncover the areas that I am required to work on based on your consent before and during treatment.

Why do you need to do an initial assessment?

As a Registered Massage Therapist in Canada and a Level 7 Remedial massage therapist in New Zealand, assessment is a requirement as part of the treatment. I aim to treat you safely and effectively which means I need to determine what may be causing you to seek massage therapy. This involves a short interview where you explain your expectations and your health history and a postural assessment which will often require some movement by you as the client. Very often the issue you are coming in with is not the root cause of your pain so I like to assess the whole body and see if we can focus in on the cause of your concerns.
